Found this book under Top 100 Free category on Amazon, downloaded and read it. I must say I was very pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it greatly. I will certainly be paying for the remainder of the books in this series.The only issue I had was with the beginning of the book with regard to setting up the basis of the whole story. It seemed to be very lacking in that it was so short and trite - events happened too quickly in this part of the tale. It should have been more drawn out to assist in character development for all of the major players.
However, right after the main character Ralan gets appointed to his new job, the tale moves forward at a more sedate pace and the story splits into different branches that actually develop each on their merits. That is why I truly began to enjoy this book.
The story has internecine battles going on within the city of Ness, but makes allusions to other battles outside the city that will also eventually have a great effect on what happens within Ness. This helped to establish this story as a good one.
Do not look for a great deal of swashbuckling swordplay, gore, and/or sex in this tale. It does not need as it holds its own without them.
I recommend that this story be read. Whoever does so will not be disappointed.

I was really torn between giving this four or five stars, since the length of the book doesn't really gives out enough of itself to really judge the story as whole. But then I thought about it, and I can't imagine a better start to en epic fantasy story and if I couldn't give that five stars, then what could I?
Giving away the book for free, expecting us to get hooked seems a bit over-confident, but reading it I could feel myself getting attached to the characters, the world and the story. I've been reading a lot of modern fantasy lately - a lot of good fantasy - and I was expecting this to be good-not-great, but suddenly I couldn't wait to pick up the book, and was so relived that I had the next couple of volumes ready on my kindle.
The world is reasonably simple, at least at first glance, and you pretty easily get an idea of the world and the tone of the story. As you progress, the characters and plot is unfolded at an excellent pace, letting you discover everything without having to juggle too many names, places and connections at once. That doesn't mean that the story is simple, and the politics and scheming of the characters quickly become more complex and intriguing.
The characters are really well written. They might be a bit trope-based, but they feel fresh and real, and play of each other really well. The drama is great and the humor really makes you loose yourself in the whole thing. A+, go read.
I found this to be a fun little introductory into what could potentially be a pretty broad fantasy world. Our protagonist is your typical teenage boy, full of angst, misdirection, mischief, disrespect for authority, etc. His older brother is, of course, one of the major political players in this world, and having a mischievous younger brother can be a bit of a problem.
The world the story is set in is a little reminiscent of video games and dystopian societies mixed with a healthy dose of fantasy, including guilds and 'robin hood-esque' undertones; just enough to make for a fun environment. The characters seem well written, and the story flows well, if a little rushed at times. I'm interested to see what comes in the future, and like that the author has, so far, released these as short novellas.
I'd say these are easy and enjoyable reads for when you don't have much time but when you do want to escape reality for a bit.
This should have been 4 or 5 stars. Ralan is a good character, the setup is really interesting, and the way the story builds is excellent. It's gone from a petty revenge by a powerful man on his aggravating kid brother to one where the whole world around them is changing. I read straight through.
Unfortunately, it ends in a total cliff-hanger - as thought the book just stopped half-way. My first thought was to buy the next book. But then I thought that might be a cliff-hanger too, and then I'd be even more annoyed. So I'm waiting for all the books in the series to be announced, and then I'll buy them.
This is good fantasy, if you like the gritty stuff.
The protagonist is a 15 yr old boy, about as obnoxious as knowitall teens get. Initially I found him unlikeable, but the author drops, rather casually, some telling information about how this boy was raised and without too much brain gymnastics the reader understands what informs his character. At one point an adult beats the kid unconscious, so this a grim world setting. It was therefor with some glee I continued reading as the young man turns the tables on the villains. It turns out the protagonist has both character and depth. This is a comming of age story and eventhough I expect I'm very much not at all the target audience as a woman in my 30s, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
I suspect this book is meant for teens and up. It is a brutal and pretty gritty type of fantasy but, if I was 12 - I would have gobbled it up, just as readily as I did today so.. good job Jake.
I imagine this would have been a kickass standalone novel if all the following parts to the story was collected in one book, and I would not normally pay for anything less than 200 pages, simply because I read it too fast. - But maybe you'll omnibus it once you finish with the stories.
The only thing I would look at is some of the descriptions used. In an early chapter the author is describing some towers and guild compounds and who lives where and whatnot. I tried reading this bit out loud and it sounded like a tonguetwister. If I was editing this, I'd have made the author work on that, but it doesnt detract from the story, hence the 4.5 stars.
